History

Paatz Viernau GmbH has developed into a renowned manufacturer without which the automotive industry would be hard to imagine.
Today the company is part of the Heller Group from Nürtingen (Baden-Württemberg), a world-leading manufacturer of advanced machine tools.

Please find below some prominent events in our company history:

2020
Bernd Malzahn retires as managing director. We thank him for his years of effort and wish him well for his well-earned retirement. Effective Dec 31, 2020, Christian Kurtenbach and Klaus Winkler take over the management of Paatz Viernau GmbH.

2019
We started an extensive investment program to secure our company a prominent place within the Heller Group and to entrench our position on the market.

2018
Paatz Viernau GmbH is taken over by the Heller Group; Bernd Malzahn remains managing director of the company and retires as participator; all 120 employees are retained.

2017
The company has to declare bankruptcy.

2014
Participator Dieter Bach has to retire for health reasons.

1997
After the bankruptcy of parent company samag, Dieter Bach and Bernd Malzahn each take over the corporate shares and continue to operate the company.

1995
Dieter Bach and Bernd Malzahn are instituted as assistant managing directors.

1993
Today's Paatz Viernau GmbH is founded as a subsidiary of samag Saalfelder Werkzeugmaschinen GmbH; 56 employees are retained.

1992
The Heldmann company from Hückeswagen purchases Paatz Maschinenbau GmbH from Treuhandanstalt and declares bankruptcy only a few months later.

1990
GERMAN REUNIFICATION: The Heckert state holding is dissolved and the company reformed as Paatz Viernau GmbH with 520 employees and 40 apprentices.

1986
Initial operation of continuous CAD/CAM technology for multi-spindle drill heads based on a HP computer and a Mikromat manufacturing cell.

1972
The company is socialized for good; over 600 employees.

1969
The company is assigned to VEB Machine Tool State Holding "Fritz Heckert", Karl-Marx-Stadt.

1968
Formation of a modern training workshop.

1966
Product portfolio is expanded to include automated elements.

1960
Expansion of manufacturing facilities in conjunction with the move to Viernau,Thuringia (the company is still based in Viernau today).

1957
State involvement begins; 128 employees.

1948
95 employees and 7 apprentices are working at the company.

1945
Post-war years; reconstruction with 17 employees manufacturing everyday goods (e.g. lighters, lawnmowers), later turning lathes for mechanics; custom machinery construction begins with drilling and milling units.

1940
War years; 65 employees.

1933
Hermann Paatz enters the company and substantially alters the product portfolio to include the construction and manufacture of multi-spindle drill heads, “THE” means of rationalization of the future.

1919
Expansion of catalogue to hunting guns; 50 employees.

1900
Manufacture of sporting pistols; considerable expansion; 15 employees.

1890
founded as an arms factory in Mehlis (today: Zella-Mehlis) by master gunsmith Bernhardt Paatz under the name “Bernhardt Paatz Waffenfabrik”.
